IDL Launches Laser Inscription Service

International Diamond Laboratories (IDL) has launched a laser inscription service, allowing customers to have their diamond certificate number inscribed on the stone for security.

The inscription, IDL said in a release, is made using a very fine laser beam on the girdle of the diamond; it can only be seen with a magnifying loupe or a special diamond inscription viewer.

The minimum font size for the laser inscription is 30 microns (0.03 millimeters) and can only be inscribed on diamonds of at least .20 carats and up, as it is dependent upon the thickness of the girdle.

In Dubai, customers can obtain laser inscriptions on diamonds from IDL’s facility in the Gold Land Building at Gold Souq.

IDL CEO Peter Meeus commented, “There is a growing trend for laser inscription worldwide for protecting the identity of the diamond and also for personalizing the jewelry with simple messages, names or symbols, to be viewed in privacy…The laser inscription is a guarantee that your diamond is not replaced with another and is the same as the one described on the certificate you obtained.”
