When Consumers Bought Jewelry In The Recession

Historically, the November-December period has been the most important selling season for jewelers. At recently as the 1990s, jewelry sales during those two months represented one-third of a specialty jeweler’s annual sales.

 

Over the past decade, jewelry sales in the November-December period have become slightly less important. However, in the recession, jewelry sales in the November-December 2008 period dipped sharply, as graph 8 illustrates. While there was a recovery in 2009, preliminary sales results for 2010 suggest that the holiday season will be a less important period for jewelers.
