Photo Inscription on Diamonds Made Possible by New Technology

January 16, 08 by IDEX Online Staff Reporter

A Silicon Valley firm has developed a new nanotechnology enabling it to permanently inscribe high-resolution photographs, in a full range of grayscale tones, on the surface of diamonds and other gemstones.

The images inscribed on the stone’s surface by Gemory’s patented PureDiamond process are invisible to the naked eye but can be viewed with a portable viewing device, called GemmaView.

The process preserves the stone’s original quality and does not damage it in any way. Photos can be inscribed side by side, and more photos can be added at a later date, even by future generations, the company says. In addition, the inscriptions can be removed at any time.

Inscribing numbers or logos on diamonds is nothing new, but the PureDiamond process allows for more elaborate inscriptions and personalization of diamonds by their owners.

Gemory also explained that the technology has positive implications for security – because the photo inscriptions cannot be duplicated.
