Ten unexploded bombs were discovered by police in Surat, in the state of Gujarat, just days after 45 people were killed when 16 bombs exploded in nearby Ahmedabad, one in a diamond market. A senior police official announced that they had already defused seven bombs and were working on three more, Reuters reported.
Responsibility for the Ahmedabad bombs was claimed by a group called the “Indian Mujahideen,” which said the attack was in response to a 2002 massacre in Gujarat in which approximately 2,500 people, mostly Muslims, were killed by Hindu mobs.
Although it was reported on Sunday and Monday that Ahmedabad’s diamond polishing units had returned to normal activity following the weekend attacks, reports are surfacing of factories closing for a limited amount of time following the discovery of the live bombs.
In addition, some factory operators are holding meetings this evening to discuss the situation.
Ahmedabad and Bangalore have been the sites of violent clashes in the past. A man involved in a local ultra-conservative Muslim religious group was arrested by the police in connection to the Saturday bombings.
