Cameroon Plans Diamond Mining
June 30, 09
The Africans state of Cameroon wants to develop a diamond deposit discovered last year, planning to start mining by the end of 2010, Bloomberg reported Friday.
C&K Mining, a joint-venture between an unidentified South Korean company and the government of Cameroon surveyed the south-eastern Mobilong region in 2008. It found a diamond deposit that holds an estimated 736 million carats.
Cameroon’s south-eastern region borders with the diamond rich Central African Republic (CAR), however to date there were no widely available reports of diamond finds in the country.
“Mining could begin a year from now,” Oscar Matip, Cameroon’s director of mines and geology at the Ministry of Industries, Mines, and Technological Development, told reporters in the capital, Yaounde.
“This amount could represent five times the world’s annual consumption,” Matip claimed.
