Children's Jewelry Recalled Due to High Levels of Cadmium
June 30, 10
In yet another potential cadmium scare, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with toy distributor SmileMakers Inc., of Spartanburg, South Carolina, today announced a voluntary recall of Children’s Happy Charm bracelets and football rings. The recall affects about 66,200 bracelets and 2,200 rings.
The "Happy" charm bracelet is comprised of colorful beads on a small elastic band to which a metal charm in the shape of a butterfly, moon or sun is attached. The football ring is a small adjustable metal band to which a football charm (made of metal) is attached. The metal charms contain cadmium, which is toxic if ingested by young children and can cause adverse health effects.
The jewelry, which was manufactured in China, was distributed free of charge at the offices of doctors and dentists from June 2005 until March 2010.
