The Driving Force
Solid sales gains in the first half of 2011 were driven by the “right” factors, including a higher average ticket and more sales transactions. The higher average ticket confirmed that shoppers had accepted higher retail prices for jewelry while an increase in transactions confirmed that more people were shopping for jewelry more often.

Outlook Bright, But Recession Possible
After seven months, total U.S. jewelry and watch sales are up 11.3 percent, a dramatic gain by any measure. While government data does not provide a forecast, it does provide an annual “run rate” for jewelry sales, based solely on current history. The latest government data suggests that U.S. jewelry sales will be in the range of $68-69 billion during 2011, a gain of between 11 percent and 12 percent.
