Russian Authorities Intercept Diamond Smuggling
October 20, 03
Russian authorities have foiled a diamond smuggling attempt last week when it stopped a Ukrainian citizen with $3.8 million worth of diamonds.
The seven kilograms of diamonds were caught by Russian security services during a customs inspection in the city of Bryansk near the Russian – Ukrainian border. It was not clear if the diamonds were polished or rough or if the inspection was a routine check or based on a tip off.
However a source in the Russian security service, the FSB, says the diamonds were en route to Israel.
Recently an Israeli diamantaire, Israel Diamond Exchange Vice President Avraham ‘Bumi’ Traub, was arrested in Hungary at the request of Russian authorities, apparently for involvement in diamond smuggling.
