India’s Rough Diamond Trade Softens in January

India’s gross imports of rough diamonds totaled 15.494 million carats in January, carrying a price tag of $891.89 million, an average of $57.56 per carat (p/c). This a decline of 4.68 percent in volume of imports and a rise of 8.73 percent in dollar value compared to January 2007. In Indian rupees, imports declined 3.31 percent.
In the April-January period, India imported 141.75 million carats of rough with a tag price of $8.152 billion, an average of $57.51 p/c.
Rough diamond exports declined 5.56 percent in January to 2.498 million carats, with the value of imports declining to $44.77 million – a 3.32 percent fall in U.S. dollars.
