The near-flawless type II white diamond was of “outstanding color” with no visible inclusions and was found on September 8, the company said.
Letseng has produced some of the largest high color and clarity diamonds in recent years, including the three largest in the past decade. In 2006 Gem Diamonds found the 603 carat Lesotho Promise and in 2007 mined the 493 carat Letseng Legacy.
The mine was owned by De Beers, but was later abandoned. It served as a starting point for Gem Diamonds that has quickly grown into one of the leading global diamond miners with mining activities in
Congo.
