Blue Diamond Sets Record Price, Again

April 22, 12 by IDEX Online Staff Reporter

(IDEX Online News)
–A 3.54-carat fancy blue SI1 diamond set in a platinum ring by Tiffany was the leading item at Sotheby’s Magnificent Jewels sale, selling for $2,434,500. The result is nearly five times the top estimate the auction house provided for the lot, $0.5 million.

According to Sotheby’s, the result is a record price for a fancy blue diamond.

The diamond with the highest estimate at Sotheby's Magnificent Jewels auction in New York was a 23.02 carats fancy vivid yellow cushion-shaped step-cut diamond. The diamond had a $1.5-$2 million estimate and sold for $1,874,500.

Another leading item was a fancy pink cut-cornered rectangular modified brilliant-cut diamond weighing 6.03 carats set in a platinum ring, framed by small round near colorless diamonds. It sold for $1.08 million, at the top end of Sotheby's $0.9-1.1 million estimate.
