15.5-ct Yellow Diamond Sells for $1.14m

March 28, 24 by John Jeffay

(IDEX Online) - A 15.51 carat fancy vivid yellow diamond sold for $1.14m earlier today at the Phillips Hong Kong Jewels Auction, beating its low estimate.

The natural color, VS2 clarity, no-fluorescence brilliant-cut stone (pictured) led the sale, mounted in platinum and yellow gold between two triangular-shaped diamonds weighing 1.25 carat in total (F-G color, VS clarity).

The pre-sale estimate was $950,000 to $1,250,000. It sold for $73,253 per carat, against the high estimate of $80,593 per carat, according to the Fancy Color Research Foundation (FCRF).

It described the stone as "a very large vivid yellow round brilliant cut diamond with exceptional rarity, notably due to its shape," but gave it a visual score of 5 out of 12, noting that unusual cut "funnels most of the color beneath the table, effectively draining the crown of its color".

The second highest-grossing lot was a Van Cleef & Arpels turquoise and diamond necklace that sold for $584,000, way above its $110,000 to 150,000 estimate.
