US Marine Charged with $550,000 Jewel Raids

April 16, 24 by John Jeffay

(IDEX Online) - A US marine has been charged with stealing jewelry worth over $500,000 in heists on two stores in Texas, USA.

Marcelo Hernandez, aged 18, who lives with his parents, is accused of smashing through the front door of David Yurman Jewelry at Houston Premium Outlet Mall, Houston, last October, smashing the display cases and stealing over 200 pieces of jewelry valued at over $380,000, according to Harris County Precinct 4 Constable's Office.

He is also accused of stealing over $170,000 worth of jewelry from Helzberg Diamond, at the same mall, in April of this year.

"This is what we term a serial jewelry store burglar," said constable Mark Herman. "As you can see in the photographs, he busts in with a sledgehammer. He was being taken into custody and his dog tags fell out. He did tell us he was in the U.S. military."

Police say they have recovered the majority of the stolen jewelry.  Hernandez is being held at a county jail and has been charged with first degree felony theft.
