Vacation Couple Unearth 3.36-ct Diamond
July 06, 25
(IDEX Online) - A couple who went sifting for diamonds on vacation in Arkansas, USA, unearthed a 3.36-carat gem valued at up to $10,000.
A more precise value, based on clarity and color, has yet to be determined.
Scott and Jennifer Freitas, from Tampa, Florida, stopped off at the Crater of Diamonds State Park during a road trip. They paid $15 each to enter the park, and rented a sifting screen and other basic equipment from local business LoveJoy Diamond Screens.
The park, located near near Murfreesboro, is the only diamond deposit in the US. It is a 37-acre field - the eroded surface of a volcanic crater - that is regularly plowed, and that yields a variety of rocks, minerals, and gemstones as well as diamonds.
It's the only place in the world where visitors can sift for diamonds and keep whatever they find.
Most diamonds found at the park are white, yellow, or brown. The largest diamond ever discovered there was the 40.23-carat Uncle Sam diamond.
