(IDEX Online) - A new Netflix documentary, Stolen: Heist of the Century, examines how a gang of five Italian thieves stole over $100m of diamonds from an underground vault in Antwerp.
It includes interviews with the alleged mastermind Leonardo Notarbartolo. His team bypassed 10 layers of security, including infrared and heat detectors, magnetic locks, and seismic alarms, and carried out the crime without threats or violence.
The 2003 Antwerp Diamond Center heist was the biggest diamond theft ever, and most of the gems have never been recovered.
The documentary, which airs from August 8, is based on the book Flawless by Scott Andrew Selby and Greg Campbell.
It includes insights from Antwerp detectives who solved the case and from the alleged mastermind, Leonardo Notarbartolo, who was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Three accomplices were sentenced to five years each and a fifth suspect has never been arrested.
In September 2023 Amazon released a dramatized account of the heist, called Everybody Loves Diamonds.
