Merchant Reunited with $300,000 Diamonds after Airport Mix-Up

August 10, 25 by John Jeffay

(IDEX Online) - A diamond merchant has been reunited with a $300,000 of diamonds, after he mistakenly picked up another passenger's bag.

The unnamed Dubai-based merchant only realized his error when he arrived at his destination and found the bag filled with clothes instead of diamonds.

He'd been traveling via Dubai International Airport. with four bags of diamonds to another Gulf country for a trade show.

After his luggage was scanned, he picked up a bag very similar to his own, but belonging to a passenger headed for Bangladesh - who in turn picked up his bag.

Dubai Police identified the passenger from surveillance cameras and managed to recover the diamonds with the help of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the UAE embassy in Dhaka and authorities in Bangladesh.

"The merchant put the bags on the airport's scanner and then picked up the wrong bag by mistake," said police.

"The bag was similar to one belonging to a passenger travelling to Bangladesh."
