Louvre Heist: French Police Arrest Last Suspected Gang Member
November 26, 25
(IDEX Online) - French prosecutors said yesterday (25 November) that four more people had been arrested in connection with the Louvre heist last month.
In total eight people have now been arrested, including all four of those suspected of being involved in the actual break-in at the museum's Apollo Gallery on 19 October and stealing crown jewels valued at $102m.
All eight items, including jewels connected to Empress Marie Louise, Empress Eugenie and 19th century queens, are still missing and may already have been broken up.
Laure Beccuau, the Paris prosecutor, told reporters two men, aged 38 and 39, had been arrested and two women aged 31 and 40, all from the Paris region.
A four-man gang used a mechanical ladder to reach a second-floor balcony and breaking through a window. They cut through the display cases with power tools and escaped on motorbikes.
Some of those arrested are also suspected of possible links to other high end thefts, including that of gold nuggets at Paris's Natural History Museum, which showed a similar use of industrial cutting tools.
