Record Fancy Vivid Blue-Green Diamond Could Fetch $12.8m

April 26, 26 by John Jeffay

(IDEX Online) - The world's largest fancy vivid blue-green diamond - the 5.50-carat Ocean Dream - is to be auctioned at Christie's Geneva.

The triangular-cut, SI1 clarity, Type 1a stone is expected to fetch CHF 7 million to CHF 10 million ( USD 8.75 million to USD 12.8 million) at the Magnificent Jewels sale on 13 May. It is set in a ring with white diamonds and belongs to a private collector.

The Ocean Dream sold for CHF 7.7 million (equivalent at the time to USD 8.65 million), also at Christie's Geneva, in May 2014.

The GIA says it is the largest fancy vivid blue-green diamond it has ever certified. The stone was cut from an 11.70-carat rough recovered from an unspecified central African country in the 1990s.

It was first revealed to the world during Splendor of Diamonds, a landmark exhibition organized by the Smithsonian Institute's Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. in 2003.

Max Fawcett, global head of Christie's jewellery, described the gem as an "exceptional jewel of profound rarity and allure".
