Diamond Eye: Jeweler's Dazzling 2.0-ct Prosthesis

November 11, 25 by John Jeffay

(IDEX Online) - A jeweler who lost his right eye to a parasitic infection now has a prosthetic replacement - with a dazzling 2.0-carat diamond.

Slater Jones, 23, owner of Jones Jewelry, based in Arab, Alabama, USA, approached John Imm, an expert in ocular prosthetics, with a special request - to combine his passion for jewelry with Imm's expertise in medical technology.

Imm initially doubted whether he could fit such a large diamond into a prosthetic, but succeeded after six weeks of careful precision work.

He posted: "I have made around 10,000 artificial eyes in the last 32 years for patients as young as 6 weeks old to 101 years old. This artificial eye is the most valuable in terms of materials."

Jones began losing his sight at the age of 17 to ocular toxoplasmosis and doctors were unable to save it.

"I lost my eye, but it brought new light to my life," he said.

"I turned a tragedy into my brightest asset," he posted on his iamdiamondeye Instagram account.
