DRC’s ‘Named and Shamed’ Officials Suspended

November 13, 02 by IDEX Online Newsroom

DRC President Joseph Kabila has formally suspended all government officials accused in the October 21st U.N. report of taking part in the exploitation of the country’s gold, diamond and mineral resources. The suspensions come just a week after Kabila sacked the managing committee of the country’s state diamond mining company, Miba.

The U.N. report alleged that at one Miba mine, the management and the Zimbabwean soldiers guarding the mine stole $25 million worth of diamonds annually.

Among those officials suspended are the country’s National Security Minister Mwenze Kongolo, the chief of the National Security Agency Didier Kazadi and the DRC’s lead negotiator at the peace talks, Katumba Mwanke.
