IGI India Launches Gold Assaying Service
September 23, 09
A BIS hallmark is a mark of conformity, widely accepted by consumers throughout
IGI is certified by the BIS to certify gold for its fineness number and will mark jewelry pieces by lasering the gold hallmark directly onto them. The IGI India assaying service consists of five components: BIS Mark, the fineness number—how many karats of gold out of 24 are in the piece, the assaying and hallmarking center's mark, jeweler’s mark and year of marking, denoted by a code letter decided by BIS, meaning the letter "A" was approved by BIS for year 2000, "B" for 2001 and "J" for 2009.
The IGI mark will also be lasered onto every article of jewelry since it is the hallmarking center. Hallmarking is the accurate determination and official recording of the proportionate content of gold metal in gold based jewelry, and is used in many countries as a guarantee of purity or fineness of gold jewelry.
