American Moms to Receive $3.6B in Jewelry this Mother’s Day

(IDEX Online News) – US consumers are forecast to spend $3.6 billion on jewelry this Mother’s Day, as spending on electronic gifts such as tablets, smartphones and cameras declines.
This year, the average amount being splurged on mothers looks set to drop from a survey high of $168.94 last year to $162.94 this year, according to the National Retail Federation's (NRF) 2014 Mother’s Day Spending Survey conducted by Prosper Insights & Analytics. Total Mother’s Day spending is expected to reach $19.9 billion.
Other popular gift choices vying with jewelry include experiences such as a day at a spa, housewares or gardening tools and outings such as brunch or dinner. Two-thirds of survey respondents said they would also be buying flowers.
Spending on electronics is expected to drop from $2.3 billion last year to $1.7 billion this year.
As for where people are doing their buying, 33.5 percent will head to specialty stores, 32.4 percent will go to department stores, 24 percent will opt for discount stores, and 29 percent will do their shopping online.
