UN Condemn Renewed Fighting In Congo
December 26, 02The U.N. Security Council has denounced renewed fighting in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) that has broken out just a week after warring Congolese factions signed a new peace deal.
Council members expressed concern at the serious human rights violations and the displacement of tens of thousands of civilians. U.N. diplomats said between 50,000 and 60,000 people have fled their homes in the latest fighting. The council called on all Congolese parties "to immediately cease hostilities" and implement the power-sharing agreement signed in Pretoria, South Africa on December 16.
The statement also condemned the fighting between RCD-Goma and armed groups in Uvira, according to the Council President, Ambassador Alfonso Valdivieso of Colombia. He added that members "also called upon all concerned to stop material support to the parties engaged in military activities in the northeast and the Kivus."
Uvira is located in the diamond rich province of Ituri.
