March 03, 04 by Albert Robinson

The Hong Kong International Jewelry Show got off to a positive start today (Tuesday) with the news that Hong Kong’s jewelry exports jumped 17 percent last year to $2.85 billion.

The largest rises were seen in exports to Taiwan, Italy, France, Japan, Germany, the Chinese mainland, Britain and the United States.

“Thanks to their aggressive sales and marketing efforts, Hong Kong’s jewelers have been able to weather the storm last year,” said Leung Sik Wah, Chairman of the Trade Development Council’s Jewelry Advisory Committee. “Hong Kong is now the world’s third largest exporter of fine jewelry. Exports to major markets recorded a double-digit growth,” he said.

A total of 1,380 exhibitors from 34 countries – a 15 percent jump on last year - are taking part in the four-day show which this year celebrates its 21st anniversary.

More than 40 groups of buyers from around the world will be visiting the exhibition, which is expected to see a record number of visitors.
