HRD Scientist Discloses Telltale Signs of Synthetic And HPHT Diamonds

April 21, 04 by Albert Robinson

A senior research scientist at the Antwerp Diamond High Council (HRD) has revealed telltale signs which could indicate that a diamond is either synthetic or a natural stone that has been color treated by High Pressure-High Temperature (HPHT).

Dr Katrien De Corte of HRD Research, speaking at the Baselworld show in Switzerland, described the procedures involved and spoke about methods of identification being developed by HRD Research.

She spoke about the methods used for producing synthetic diamonds, namely Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD), and HPHT. She also explained the process for a permanent color change of natural brown diamonds by submitting stones to HPHT treatment.

For each of the three procedures she provided indicators that could show whether a diamond is synthetic or HPHT treated, such as color, proportions, strain patterns, typical inclusions and sensitivity to ultraviolet (UV) and infrared light.

She stressed, however, that the indicators were signs that a diamond might be synthetic or HPHT treated, but were not definitive proof. For that to be determined, such diamonds would have to be submitted for examination to a qualified laboratory, such as that operated by the HRD.

“The work being done at HRD Research will prove indispensable to the diamond trade,” said Peter Meeus, HRD Managing Director. “Whether we like it or not, these diamonds are going to be a factor in the market, and HRD is committed to being able to detect them so as to protect the integrity of the natural stone.”
