Copy of Royal Engagement Ring Become Collector's Piece

April 12, 05 by Albert Robinson

Does a piece of jewelry have to be expensive and exquisitely fashioned to become a collectors' piece? The answer from Britain would seem to be in the negative after discount supermarket chain Asda sold out its 2,500 Camilla Parker-Bowles engagement rings in less than a week in the run-up to Saturday's Royal Wedding.

The Duchess of Cornwall's
ring - the real thing

Demand for the copy of the platinum and diamond ring, that Asda sold for £19 ($36) and became its fastest-selling jewelry piece, is so high that the rings are now selling on auction site eBay for more than 15 times that price.

But despite demand from fans of royalty from across the globe, Asda says it will not produce any more of the Camilla rings which are made of silver and cubic zircona rather than platinum and diamonds like the original.

Asda said customers started queuing for the chance to buy the rings before stores opened last Monday while some of its 274 stores sold all their stock in pre-orders. Demand for the "art deco" ring had been international, from Australia to Russia, from Japan to the U.S.

The only option for customers wanting a copy of the Duchess of Cornwall's ring is to order a "real" version of the ring, but that will set you back £30,000 ($57,000). Perhaps not surprisingly, Asda says it has not yet received any orders.

The original ring used to belong to the Queen Mother and was a present from her husband, King George VI. Some experts have valued the ring, which features a square-cut central diamond with three baguette-cut diamonds on either side of it set in platinum, at up to $1.2 million.
