Proposal to Rename NYC’s 47th Street 'William Goldberg Way'

April 14, 05 by Joseph V. Kuca

Diamantaire William Goldberg, the man who coined the phrase ‘The magic is in the make!’, and who passed away in October 2003 is gone, but not forgotten. Not, at least that is, in the minds of many in New York’s famed Diamond District.

New York City’s Community Board Five is considering a request to rename 47th street, the heart of the city’s thriving diamond industry, William Goldberg Way.

The Board placed flyers in conspicuous places throughout the district this week soliciting the public’s participation in the board’s Consents & Variances Committee Meeting to be co-chaired by Mickey Schwartz and Lawrence Zucker at the Fashion Institute of Technology located at 227 West 27th Street, D Building, Reeves Great Hall at 5pm.

The public notices were specifically placed to solicit input from merchants and tenants in the area regarding the proposal. The public is also invited to voice its support for the proposed street name change at the board’s full meeting immediately following at 6pm.

Goldberg, who founded his company, the William Goldberg Diamond Corporation, almost 50 years ago in New York and created a leading diamond manufacturing establishment over the decades, later expanded to making extremely high-end diamond jewelry as well.

A former DTC Sightholder, Goldberg polished a number of the world’s most famous diamonds, including the Premier Rose, a 137-carat, D flawless pear shape diamond; the 89-carat, D flawless Guinea Star; as well as the 5.11-carat Red Shield, the largest fancy red ever certified by the GIA.
