‘American Girl’ Children’s Jewelry Recalled for Lead Poisoning Hazard

April 02, 06 by IDEX Online Staff Reporter

American Girl, a U.S. marketer and retailer of children toys and clothing, announced an immediate recall of 180,000 units of American Girl Children’s Jewelry Thursday due to high lead contents.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and American Girl, a division of Mattel, said consumers should stop using recalled products immediately, unless otherwise instructed.

So far no cases of poisoning have been reported.

The recalled jewelry includes American Girl necklaces, bracelets, earrings and hair accessories for girls. The recall does not include jewelry for American Girl dolls. The jewelry packaging features a red and white cardboard backing with “American Girl” and “Made in China” written on the front.

The items were sold at Only American Girl Place in Chicago and New York, and the American Girl Outlet in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, from May 1999 through February 2006 for between $8 and $12. American Girl jewelry sold through its catalog or website is not included in the recall.

In a release consumers were told that they should immediately take recalled jewelry away from children and return the items to the company for a full refund.
