Diamonds Worth $4.22 Million Stolen In Canada

February 08, 07 by IDEX Online Staff Reporter

In what is believed to be the biggest diamond theft in Canada’s history, C$5 million ($4.22 million) worth of rough and polished diamonds were stolen over the weekend from Gem Star in North York, Ontario, Canada.

According to reports in the local press, the perpetrators first cut the phone lines to prevent the building's security system from connecting to an outside alarm. Then they broke into two safes in Gem Star offices. When done, the thieves left the seen undetected.

Police sources said they believe the break-in took several hours, probably on Saturday, but was discovered only Monday morning. They cut the safes open and left some of their equipment behind while leaving the scene.

Gem Star is reportedly one of several diamond and jewelry businesses in the building, leading police to believe that the theft was planned well in advance.

Police said there were no surveillance cameras and they don't have any suspects, asking for the public’s help in resolving the case.
