Report: Conflict Diamonds Smuggled Into Surat

July 01, 07 by IDEX Online Staff Reporter

India's Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) claims that conflict diamonds are being smuggled into India and are making their way to Surat, the country’s polishing center.

According to reports in the Indian press, the DRI has information about a number of diamond traders in Surat involved in the import and sale of the illicit goods.

“These traders and firms are under our scanner and our investigations are on,” Expressindia quoted DRI additional director general, M Michael.

The rough diamonds, according to the DRI, are brought on fishing boats through the shallow waters of Gujarat’s west coast. The diamonds arrive from “Antwerp, London and Israel,” according to an unnamed DRI officer.
