GCAL to Grade Diamonds Auctioned by Christie's

Gem Certification & Assurance Lab (GCAL), has been approved by Christie's auction house to provide diamond certification services for diamonds consigned to Christie's for sale. GCAL will certify diamonds smaller than 2 carats that are not D / flawless.

According to Francois Curiel, International director and chairman, Christie's Europe, of particular importance was GCAL’s grading of optical symmetry and brilliance, as well as the addition of a diamond’s Gemprint to the certification.

“We believe it is important for Christie's to introduce these reports to the auction world,” Curiel said.

In auctions of D / flawless diamonds and of stones larger than 2 carats, a Gemological Institute of America (GIA) certificate would be required.

Only GCAL certificates and GIA reports are currently approved for inclusion in Christie's catalogs.
