Roll Over Beethoven, and Dig These LifeGem News

Even rocker Chuck Berry, who wished to kick over the bucket of old conventions, didn't imagine that the hero of his immortal song would be further immortalized as an auctioned gem. But that is exactly what human remains-turned-into-diamond firm LifeGem did. The firm, which takes remains of dearly departed people and pets and turns them into diamonds, has recently converted strands of genius composer Ludwig van Beethoven into a 0.56 carat, round brilliant, fancy blue / SI1 diamond. The stone was placed on eBay last week with a reserve price of $1 million. LifeGem said it plans to donate the proceeds to assist underprivileged children. "The Beethoven LifeGem offers us an opportunity to highlight new technology that captures carbon from strands of hair," CEO Greg Herro said in explanation of the move. The auction can be viewed here.
