Angola’s rough diamond sales of 9.4 million carats generated for the country $1.2 billion in 2006. While the exports fell shy of the country’s goal of 10 million carats, they are still a 32.22 percent increase over 2005 figures.
According to Helder Marques, sales director of Sodiam, 32 percent of exports were to Dubai, followed by Antwerp (28 percent), Hong Kong (19 percent), Geneva (10 percent) and Tel Aviv (7 percent).
It is understood that the majority of these exports are of industrial grade diamonds.
