WGI Appoints First Chairman for Chinese Region

January 13, 08 by IDEX Online Staff Reporter

The World Gemological Institute (WGI) appointed Rafael Aharoni as the institute’s first chairman for China, Hong Kong and Macau. Aharoni, according to a WGI release, will lead an aggressive expansion plan for labs in region.

Aharoni, whose family has been in the diamond business for four generations, is a Hong Kong-based diamond professional and honorary chairman of the Gemological Association of Sichuan, PRC, as well as senior advisor to the Asian Institute of Gemological Science. He is also the former director of the Hong Kong Institute of Gemology.

“This appointment will strengthen our position in the China, Hong Kong and Macau area as well as in other countries in South East Asia, and it is a significant milestone in our strategy to invest here,” said Yinon Feldheim, WGI’s CEO.

“It is also an example of our philosophy of building alliances with local forces for the benefit of the consumers,” Feldheim added. “Every day we see consumers who are more educated in diamonds and jewelry and we feel that the trade needs to accommodate them with more gemological information. This is one of our most important missions.”

According to Aharoni, “The Chinese market is growing fast, and we believe we can contribute to this process. We shall do our best to share our practices and research with the Chinese people.”
