Great Expectations at GJEPC’s IIJS-Signature Exhibition

March 02, 08 by Edahn Golan, Goa

The IIJS Signature, Goa show opened Friday with 98 hand-picked Indian manufacturers exhibiting to a small, select group of 350 international and local buyers. The designs at the event are meant to serve as a showcase of the industry’s innovation and design.

Organized by the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), IIJS-Signature has been conceptualized to position the Indian gem and jewelry industry internationally as the “preferred source of quality gems & jewelry.”

The emphasis of the show on design and innovation took different approaches. Some have chosen to test the Indian market with the introduction of baguette-set jewelry in white gold – a combination that has not been popular in the past.

Some manufactures have decided to utilize traditional designs of rose cut diamonds set in big and elaborate items with enamel and color gem accents, and to evolve them into contemporary designs – aiming for the large market of Indian nationals living overseas.

Items were largely priced from $1,000 and up.

Exhibitors expressed some mixed feelings about the show. Most expected to see more buyers and business, yet responded positively as to whether they planned to attendg again next year. All in all, the impression is that both existing and new buyers are placing orders, and a few noted that the orders were very large ones.

The buyers have not been the typical mix of U.S., European and Far East attendees, but rather buyers from other countries that provide new opportunities. Many have came from Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Azerbaijan; these have been joined by trade delegations from Uzbekistan, Hungary, Poland, Russia, Iran, Japan, and even neighboring Pakistan, with which India has strenuous relations.

“This is the first show of GJEPC and it will highlight India’s capabilities to manufacture jewelry in terms of design, craftsmanship and quality at par with international centers in the world,” said GJEPC Chairman Sanjay Kothari.

“The IIJS Signature is going to send a loud message to the gem and jewelry fraternity across the world that India has moved from being recognized merely for its labor intensive skills, to excellence in design and craftsmanship,” Navin Jashnani, convener, IIJS Sub Committee, added.
