Diamonds and Cricket

April 09, 08 by A Jewelbiz India Report

Large Indian diamond companies, Gitanjali and RosyBlue, have in different initiatives both linked up with India’s most popular sport – cricket.

Gitanjali recently acquired the sponsorship rights for the Kolkata Tigers, the cricket team that represents India’s eastern metropolis, and a major jewelry manufacturing centre, in the Indian Cricket League (ICL). The sponsorship will focus on the group’s men’s steel jewelry brand, Revv, which is positioned as a youthful, fashion brand.

A new line of jewelry, "The Captain Collection," was also launched recently at a fashion show in which the captains of the teams participating in the ICL, all of whom are renowned international cricketers, showcased rings, pendants, bracelets and cuff links from the collection.

The group will also present a diamond ball from its Tesoro collection to the Man of the Series. Crafted with 82.2 grams of gold and 30 carats of diamonds, the ball is valued at approximately Rs 3 million ($75,225).

At the same time, Orra, the diamond jewelry brand from the Rosy Blue Group, presented a special gold cricket ball studded with diamonds and rubies to the captain of the Indian cricket team, Anil Kumble as a celebration of his feat in becoming only the third player in cricket history to capture 600 test wickets.

The ball has 1,500 diamonds totaling 37 carats and 640 rubies totaling 239 carats. The presentation ceremony, attended by a number of leading Indian cricketers, from both the present and the past, was held on March 25, a day before the commencement of the cricket series between India and South Africa.
