Ahmedabad’s Diamond Industry Back to Work After Saturday’s Bombings

July 28, 08 by Edahn Golan

Ahmedabad’s diamond polishing units are back to normal activity after 45 people were killed over the weekend when 16 bombs, one in a diamond market, exploded in the city.

The Saturday evening blasts rocked this northwestern Indian city in the state of Gujarat, a day after a series of explosions hit India’s high-tech capital, Bangalore.

The local diamond industry did not let the events halt its activities, and on Sunday it was business as usual with polishing units opening their doors.

“There is no tension at all. People have put behind Saturday's bomb blasts in the area,” former minister and diamond businessman Gordhan Zadaphia told the local daily Economic Times. “The blasts have not shaken the confidence of the people,” he added, “People are moving around and doing their jobs just like everyday.”

Ahmedabad and Bangalore have been the sites of violent clashes in the past. A man involved in a local ultra conservative Muslim religious group was arrested by the police in connection to the Saturday bombings.
