DDC Leadership Meets Thai Prime Minister

September 29, 09 by IDEX Online Staff Reporter

Executive leadership of the Diamond Dealers Club (DDC) headed by Acting President Moshe Mosbacher, met with the Thai Prime Minister, Abhisit Vejjajiva, in New York. The topic of the meeting was how to improve business opportunities between the American and Thai diamond and jewelry industry.

The meeting followed an invitation by the Thai embassy and the Thai Ministry of Commerce to discuss the potential for trade expansion, including bilateral trade cooperation.

Prime Minister Vejjajiva relayed to DDC leadership the commitment his government had to an open economy, with the private sector playing a critical role. Vejjajiva added that Thailand deals with business in a transparent manner and he looked forward to growth in the “business relationship between Thailand and the United States” in the jewelry sector as well as other sectors. He explained that jewelry is now Thailand’s second largest category of exports.

Mosbacher told the delegation that the American diamond and jewelry industry were long admirers of their Thai counterparts and that DDC members look forward to more frequent exchanges with them—these include encouraging more commerce in both directions, particularly partnerships when feasible.

Mosbacher added that he and members of the DDC looked forward to working with Thai business representatives to develop a comprehensive business agenda, one that proves beneficial to the diamond and jewelry industries in both countries, especially because New York is the gateway for diamonds and jewelry entering the U.S.
