GIA, GJEPC Sign Education Agreement

November 15, 11 by Vinod Kuriyan

Donna Baker and Vasant Mehta sign the agreement

(IDEX Online News) – The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) will run its education programs at the Indian Institute of Gem & Jewellery (IIGJ) in cities across India. The IIGJ is an initiative of the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC). A formal agreement to this effect was signed by GIA CEO Donna Baker and IIGJ Chairman Vasant Mehta last night in Mumbai.

Speaking at the occasion, Mehta observed that the GJEPC was keenly aware that in order for the gem and jewelry industry to have a bright future, a well-trained workforce was essential and this is why it had launched the IIGJ.

The agreement with the GIA would ensure that the very best in education and training was imparted to the Indian workforce.

Baker noted that the Indian gem and jewelry industry was one of the most significant globally and today, the Indian consuming market was of great significance. Baker stated that the GIA was committed to promoting quality and the highest standards worldwide and she looked forward to greater engagement with the Indian industry.

The signing took place at a GIA-sponsored dinner event where the GIA’s board of governors met and interacted with leaders of the Indian gem and jewelry industry. The GIA board of governors was in India to hold their annual board meeting. This is the first time in 25 years that the board has met outside the U.S.
