The Gemological Education Certification Institute (GECI) was founded by Alberto Osimo, who serves as President of the gem lab which was recently admitted as a member of CIBJO, the World Jewellery Confederation. It is managed by CEO Fabio D'Amico.
Osimo, who has been involved in the diamond and jewelry industry for 25 years, said the lab was needed in Italy to provide cutting-edge and ethical gemological education and research.
The GECI lab's highly qualified gemologists provides diamond, colored gemstone and pearl grading certificates, and work according to international grading systems and Italian and international regulations. Reports are in English and have identification and safety codes to ensure safety and security as well as an independent and neutral grading service.
"I have received such a lot from this industry so I had the idea that GECI could give back the same opportunities to young people coming from all countries to study gemology," Osimi told IDEX Online.
"The diamond and gemstone industries are evolving rapidly and creating new market challenges for the jewelry industry: there are new and improving treatments of natural diamonds and colored gemstones along with substantial results in the creation of synthetic diamonds force the industry to reach out to a proficient gemological laboratory and deepen one’s gemological knowledge, because only both expertise and steady updating can provide the right answers to the final consumer.
"By investing in innovative technologies and equipment, and the continuous research and training of our staff, GECI aims to ensure accurate and ethical services based on the latest international standards," he added.
