India’s May Polished Diamond Exports +13%
June 21, 16(IDEX Online News) – India’s polished diamond exports recorded a substantial 13.24-percent increase in May, according to preliminary data released by the Gem and Jewelry Export Promotion Council (GJEPC).
Cut and polished diamond exports by value, increased to $1.97 billion during May compared to $1.74 billion over the same month a year previously. The number of carats exported increased to 298,500 carats compared to 259,100 carats in the prior year period.
Imports of rough diamonds rose significantly, showing a 15.09-percent increase by value, to $1.52 billion compared to $1.32 billion a year previously. A year-over-year analysis comparing the April-to-May period showed that rough imports increased 19.04-percent by volume, 275,110 carats compared to 222,740 carats in April-May 2015.
Rough exports by value increased by almost 8 percent to $127 million compared to $117.68 million in May 2015.
Exports of colored gemstones increased to $32.14 million compared to $27.16 million in May 2015, which represents an 18.34-percent improvement.
India exported $10.84 million worth of synthetic stones during May, more than twice the $4.41 million exported in May 2015.
Gold jewelry exports by value increased a substantial 48.3 percent to $801 million compared to $540 million in May 2015.
Silver jewelry exports jumped 204 percent to $369 million compared to $121.55 million over the same month in 2015.
