Grading Reports by Artificial Intelligence
July 27, 20
(IDEX Online) - GIA is using advanced artificial intelligence (AI) to evaluate diamonds "like never before".
The US-based diamond identification and grading authority has joined forces with the research division of IBM to develop the technology.
It has been "learning" to recognize diamond attributes from tens of millions of stones already graded by the Gemological Institute of America at its labs worldwide.
The AI will dramatically expand the scope of its grading reports, starting with the most popular diamond sizes, then rolling out to include more sizes, shapes and qualities.
"Adding AI to our grading methodology reflects GIA's commitment to protecting consumers in new ways," said Pritesh Patel, GIA's senior vice president and chief operating officer.
"We are proud to be the first to collaborate with IBM to bring this innovative approach to the gem and jewelry industry."
Donna Dillenberger, IBM fellow, enterprise solutions at IBM Research, said: "This system has the ability to accurately and consistently evaluate the overall effect of diamond clarity features like never before."
