Authors Chronicle Billionaire Lifestyle of Fugitive Modi

March 14, 21 by John Jeffay

(IDEX Online) - The billionaire lifestyle of fugitive diamantaire Nirav Modi is revealed in an explosive new book.

He's one of 12 Indian nationals who have sought a safe haven in London, and whose stories are told in Escaped: True Stories of Indian Fugitives in London, a Penguin paperback/Kindle by Danish Khan and Ruhi Khan.

Last month a judge in Britain approved the extradition of Modi, 49, to face charges in India that he defrauded the Punjab National Bank out of $1.85bn. He has yet to stand trial.

The authors say that, according to Indian authorities, he channeled $77m of the fraud money into his own account, $30m to his wife Ami's and $24m to his father Deepak's.
The book also details his luxury properties - a sea-facing apartment in Samudra Mahal, home to the super-rich of Mumbai, two apartments in New York's Central Park jointly worth $30m, a home valued at $6.25m in London, 11 properties in Dubai and homes in Hong Kong valued at $35m.

India's CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) arrested over 20 people, say the authors, impounded his art collection - which reportedly included some fakes - his fleet of 13 luxury cars, as well as watches and jewelry.  One diamond ring alone was valued at $1.4m.

Escaped: True Stories of Indian Fugitives in London is already out in paperback and will be available on Kindle from 22 March.
