Bonhams Sell Jewelry Owned by Sammy Davis Jr

July 13, 21 by John Jeffay

(IDEX Online) - Diamond jewelry that belonged to Sammy Davis Jr is to be auctioned next week (20 July).

Five lots are being offered at the Bonhams California Jewels sale, among them a fancy brown diamond ring seen in many performance photos (estimated at $7,000-9,000).

Davis, who died in 1990, was an icon of the US entertainment industry and part of the "Rat Pack", alongside Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Joey Bishop, and Peter Lawford.

The highest value piece is a gold and diamond solitaire ring, with an estimate of $30,000 to $40,000.

Also being offered for sale is an 18k bi-color gold, diamond and enamel monogram necklace (pictured) with an estimate of $6,000 to $8,000.

David helped break many race barriers in what was then a segregated entertainment industry.  In 1967, he became the first black man to be featured on the cover of GQ, wearing a tailored ensemble and a large gold ring.
