Hong Kong Jeweler Jailed over Fake $320,000 Heist

November 01, 21 by John Jeffay

(IDEX Online) - A struggling jeweler has been jailed for three-and-a-half years in Hong Kong after being found guilty of conspiring to defraud insurers out of $320,000.

Leung Yim-kwan, 41, arranged to pay a criminal accomplice to disappear with a suitcase of gems last April, then called police to say there had been a robbery.

She told the District Court she fell into debt after the pandemic struck, according to a report on the website of RTHK, the public broadcaster.

Her accomplice, Tang Ka-kui, 31, admitted his guilt testified for the prosecution against Leung and was jailed for 20 months.

The judge said insurers did not suffer a loss.
