Mother and Two Children Found Dead at Diamond Mine

November 18, 21 by John Jeffay

(IDEX Online) - The bodies of a mother and her two young children in Zimbabwe have been found in an open pit reportedly left unsecured by the Chinese diamond miner Anjin.

Local media say the deaths are being treated as murder and suicide, and are related to a domestic dispute.

But the incident has provoked anger against Anjin for failing to seal the pits and prevent them filling with water.

Villagers in Chiadzwa have been involved in bitter clashes with the company in recent days over its planned resumption of diamond mining.

Anjin was forced to halt operations in 2016 by the Mugabe administration but has been allowed back by his successor President Emmerson Mnangagwa, in the hope that the diamond sector will boost the country's ailing economy.

A number of villagers have been arrested and bailed on charges of public violence against the mining company.
