Indian Farmer Finds 13-ct Diamond, Valued at $66,000

December 14, 21 by John Jeffay

(IDEX Online) - A farmer in India has unearthed a high-quality diamond (pictured) weighing 13.47 caratas and valued at over $66,000.

Mulayam Singh and six associates also found six smaller rough gems while digging a small patch of land leased from the authorities in the diamond-rich Panna district of the central Madhya Pradesh state.

Diamonds finds are not unusual in the region - said to be home to 1.2m carats - but stones of such a size and value are rare.

The newly-found diamonds will be auctioned by the state government and the proceeds split equally between all seven diggers.

Mr Singh told local media he'd spend his share on his children's education.
