20-ct Diamond Breaks Australia's Auction Record

December 20, 21 by John Jeffay

(IDEX Online) - An auction house says it has broken Australia's record for the most expensive diamond, with the sale of a 20.05-ct stone for $1.16m (USD), including buyer's premium (IBP).

Leonard Joel sold the VVS2 gem at its Important Jewels Auction in Sydney, breaking its own record for a diamond sold at auction -  a 25.02-carat  stone that sold in April for $890,000 (USD), also IBP.

The emerald-cut stone that has just sold for $1.16m (pictured) is claw-set above a gallery pavé-set with brilliant-cut diamonds, flanked by trapezoid diamonds, mounted in platinum.

The auction house said it was sold to a local buyer who bid in the room, after falling in love with the piece at a viewing earlier on the day of the auction.
