Alrosa Recovers 91.86-ct Yellow-Brown Diamond

January 03, 22 by John Jeffay

(IDEX Online) - Alrosa has recovered a 91.86 carat yellow-brown diamond at its Anabar alluvial deposit, in the remote Arctic territory of Yakutia.

The stone has been named Kyndykan, to honor a little girl who, according to folklore, was the sole survivor of a smallpox outbreak that wiped out her entire settlement 200 years ago.

In September 2021, Alrosa said it was backing the Kyndykan project, also named after her, which creates jobs and  supports ancestral deer-herding and fishing among indigenous peoples of the Far North.

The newly-found diamond was recovered by Diamonds of Anabar, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Alrosa, operating in the Anabar river basin, home to the world's  largest concentration of diamond deposits outside of Africa and Australia.

In 2007, Diamonds of Anabar found a intense yellow-brown diamond which, at 236-ct, was the largest natural color rough diamond ever found in Russia.
