Jewelry Store to Close . . . After 277 Years in Business

July 13, 22 by John Jeffay

(IDEX Online) - A British jewelry store will close this weekend after an astonishing 277 years in business, at the same address.

Thurlow Champness, in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, (pictutred) was established by watchmaker George Lumley back in 1745. He also sold clocks, watches, diamond jewelry and gold pieces.

Current owner Trevor Salt is retiring 40 years in the business and says there is nobody to hand it on to.

The store has been part of his family for three generations, since Edward Thurlow Champness bought it in 1901.

"When we close the doors for the final time it will be an incredibly sad day," he told local newspaper Suffolk News.

"We are thought to be the oldest continuing retail business in Bury St Edmunds, and we are very proud of our legacy."
